Lithium Ion Motorcycle batteries

Any try a Shorai battery or know of anyone using them? I just checked out the specs for one for the CB350 project and it's weighs in at 1.23 lbs, and cost is a bit over $100. Not as cheap as the Walbarn special, but that's quite a weight savings. I though maybe some of the racer folks might have heard of it.

I found it listed at a site called Atbatt.com

  1. Team FASTLIKEJUDY uses the dry Power-Sonic batteries for those bikes that need batteries. I have heard good things about the Lithium Ion batteries with respect to size, weight and capacity. We recommend replacing those old lead acid wet batteries with new dry batteries. I know of a guy who routed his battery vent tube near his drive chain and corrosion caused his chain to fail. At an inopportune time, of course. Stay warm folks and be careful with those heaters in the shop! We want to see you in January. Happy New Year. Team FASTLIKEJUDY

  2. From what I've read on some of the other bike forums, the Shorai batteries are great.Buuuutt, if you really want to save a few pounds and your still runnin' points, just ditch the starter and battery and fit a capacitor like some of the britbikes, and Bobs your Uncle as the Brits say. I think my four year old granddaughter could prolly kick that lil' 350 over ;P

  3. I thought about scrapping the starter but the motor has a few teeth missing off the kicker, so I would need shin transplant after a few shots at that kicker. The spare motor will be the race edition! No
    Kick and some other goodies!

  5. on my bikes i use batteries from kids electric scooters. They are a little less weight but are a lot smaller. Also they are gel cells and factory sealed so you can mount them any which way. Both mine are 12v at 10amps so they got some power to em. They can be had for very little and most scooters have 2. By the scooter for 10 bucks on CL , pull the batteries out, then mount that old weedwacker engine on it. You win twice! capacitors are cool if you like dimming headlights when the revs go down. :)

  6. Actually, if the headlight is dim at low revs, the cap is not the problem. If you have a weak alternator, lousy connections, flamethrower headlight, etc. the battery only acts to mask a underlying issue. Some bikes that have an excited field alternator as opposed to permanent magnet type will have trouble with caps. Real bikes, (i.e. Brits, some Asian)with permanent magnet alternator won't have any issue.
Case in point; '66 Bonny stock (at that time)120 watt alternator, H4 halogen bulb. headlight rock steady at 750 rpm.
Back to the original question. If Marks CB has a permanent magnet alternator,(I bet it does) he would be just fine sans battery and electric boot and save a few pounds to boot.(pun intended)
Or alternately go with the lightwieght battery and smile every time he stabs that magic button.
But the SR is gettin' a cap, even with a 90mm 11:1 piston.

  7. Oh my head is spinning? What to do, what to do! My bike does have that big fat magnet I had to reef it off the side of the bike. But I also just put in an H4 bulb in the crappy little light I installed. I want to blind the oncoming traffic! So I might need a bit of a battery for that.

Easiest thing for me to do is to start running with Shaun and shed the weight from my frame and not the bike! Wait did I say easy?

  8. Well, these are cafe bikes. right? Stripped down corner carvers ridden hard? If your alternator is in good shape it will power that halogen bulb no problem (as long as it's not some 100 watt retina ripper).Fix your kickstart, and spend the money on a pair of Doc Martens ;)

  9. Maybe I'll remove the kick start (less weight) and bump start the bike and buy Running shoes for trucking down the street starting the CB! OR take
The motor out and just have the battery and starter and run the bike off the starter, OR good lord this can go on forever! I will definitely remove the starter on the backup motor and run Mikuni VM carbs and try out the Cap method. That starter alone has to be 8-10 lbs
